SUMMARY:Book Reading: Following My Spirit Home by Sam Zimmerman
DESCRIPTION:Fifth and final Event of the Summer Series: Book reading and Q&A by book author\, Sam Zimmerman \nWhen Sam Zimmerman decided to rededicate his energy and focus to painting in the late 2010s\, he found himself drawn to the stories of his family and Ojibwe community. He wanted to capture these stories in images as well as words\, and he began working with an Ojibwemowin language speaker to translate and preserve them in their native language as well. The paintings and stories he accumulated and developed between July 2019 and July 2020 are drawn from family lore and shared experiences centered in Ojibwe tradition and the natural beauty of northern Minnesota. \nZimmerman’s work explores his Ojibwe heritage by preserving oral histories handed down from elders while also reflecting the artist’s personal experiences and learnings in nature by incorporating the landscapes of Lake Superior’s North Shore\, where he and generations of his ancestors have lived. His work features Northland creatures such as moose\, loons\, wolves\, and fish as well as the night sky and native flora. Zimmerman preserves the Ojibwe storytelling tradition\, reimagining the symbolism of the clan animals in natural North Shore landscapes. His work is infused with the color theories of the abstract and expressionism movements while also promoting environmental stewardship. \nFollowing My Spirit Home features more than 80 vibrant and colorful images accompanied by stories\, mostly based on tales Zimmerman’s grandfather told him or from his own experiences in nature along the north shore of Lake Superior. The stories are presented in both English and Ojibwemowin with the goal of advancing language revitalization.

SUMMARY:Book Reading: Fatherland Motherland by Leo Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:The third event of the Summer Memoir Series: Book reading and Q&A by the author\, Leo Rodriguez \n\n\n\n\nIn Fatherland\, Motherland\, Leo Rose Rodriguez charts a path through the past to a future still blooming. With grace and excitement this collection gathers pieces of history and weaves them\, dynamic\, into a new queered creation. Lineage and legacy may serve as the warp lines\, but the pattern emerging with each skilled pass of Rodriguez’s shuttle is wholly unique\, entirely their own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“[Leo] Rodriguez takes us on a journey all its own separated into three legs in their book Fatherland\, Motherland. Themes of womanhood\, identity\, and coming into oneself are brought to life beautifully. This includes by illustrations\, decadent language\, and religious motifs. Rodriguez has created a world within a chapbook with their poetry and it’s one I believe everyone should explore.”— Valentine\, author of FOR SPITE AND ROSEMARY

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Book Reading: Body of a Frog by Aarron Sholar
DESCRIPTION:*POSTPONED* (Last updated 8/3/24) \nUnfortunately\, our reading of the “The Body of a Frog: A memoir on Self-Loathing\, Self-Love and Transgender Pregnancy” by Arron Sholar tomorrow Sunday August 4th 1:00-3pm has been postponed. We will let you all know when we have a new date and time!  \nWe hope that you will consider attending our next event in the Summer Memoir series: a reading of “Fatherland\, Motherland” by Leo Rodriguez Saturday August 10th 2-4pm.  Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you at the library in the future!  \n———— \nAfter undergoing a satisfying gender transition from female to male\, the idea of having a biological child seemed far from Aarron Sholar’s thoughts. However\, when he met the love of his life\, he made the life-altering decision to pause his transition and embark on the journey to conceive a baby. This newfound endeavor triggered a deep period of reflection\, doubt\, and anxiety. \nThe Body of a Frog narrates the story of a young girl who grew up despising her own body. Aarron struggled with body image and self-identity\, coming out as transgender at the age of seventeen after being diagnosed with gender dysphoria. His journey led him through a transformative gender transition\, realigning his body with his male identity. While content in his changed body\, in 2021\, he met his now-fiancé\, and after two years of dating\, they made the life-changing decision to start the process of conceiving a child. \nIn The Body of a Frog: A Memoir on Self-Loathing\, Self-Love\, and Transgender Pregnancy\, Sholar offers a raw\, authentic account of his experiences. He navigates the complexities of his body\, the transition journey\, and the unexpected possibility of pregnancy with a heartfelt and introspective approach. This memoir explores the full spectrum of emotions\, from the positive to the challenging\, from the clear to the perplexing\, shedding light on the intersections of self-identity\, love\, and the miracle of life.

SUMMARY:Book Reading: Work in Progress by Reid Vanderburgh
DESCRIPTION:First Event of the Summer Series: Book reading and Q&A by book author\, Reid Vanderburgh \nThis book presents a deeply personal point of view. I leave it to others to write histories of trans people at a more sociological level. Trans people need to tell our stories to each other\, to provide this continuity that has been sadly lacking in previous times. Isolation and feelings of being negatively unique are common among many trans people\, in part because this historical continuity has been lacking. It’s an overwhelming proposition\, writing this autobiography; all the layers co-exist from the beginning\, and my story can be told from perspectives as superficial as my outward appearance\, to the deepest subconscious thoughts and feelings buried in my mind from my earliest childhood. When one questions gender\, one is questioning the bedrock of one’s existence as a human being and the archaeology involved is formidable.

SUMMARY:Queer Migration Series - Displaced\, Migrated\, Transformed: QTBIPOC Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Quatrefoil Library for the third event in our series on Queer Migration! \nDisplaced\, Migrated\, Transformed: a QTBIPOC Writing Workshop. How do we nurture community in diaspora\, in spite of and because of and beyond the trauma of displacement? Bringing together the themes of queer migration and of Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color’s historical and continual displacement\, we will read and discuss a couple of poems by queer and trans writers of color. Then we will explore several writing prompts about our migration as individuals\, as given and chosen families\, as a community\, and how we are transformed and how we transform ourselves in the process. \nThis Saturday\, May 11th\, QTBIPOC creatives can participate in the workshop facilitated by Pauline Moll: a poet\, trauma-informed teaching artist\, and creative arts therapist. Writers of any experience level are welcome\, from “non-writers” to published authors. Participants are welcome to bring their personal laptops\, notebooks\, or other writing tools\, but writing supplies will also be provided. This workshop will be an affinity space for queer and trans BIPOC. \nNo RSVP required. Walk in and participate!

SUMMARY:Queer Migration Series - Moving Out: Stories of the Silent Queer Migration
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Quatrefoil Library for the first event in our series on Queer Migration! \nMinnesota has become a refuge for queer individuals fleeing their homes to escape discrimination\, violence\, and anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation. This rise of LGBTQIA+ migration worldwide has been called the “silent refugee crisis.” Sadly\, the vast majority of queer refugees do not feel safe enough to speak about their experiences. Personal narratives from these queer refugees are\, unfortunately\, far too rare. \nThis Saturday\, April 27th\, the Twin Cities Queer Transplants invite you to hear our stories and participate in breaking our silence. Members of our community will share their relocation stories\, hardships\, and triumphs as we heal together. \nNo RSVP required. Walk in and participate!
